Introduction to School of Foreign Languages
The School of ForeignLanguages, founded in October 2014, was formerly known as the Department of ForeignLanguage Teaching. The School has a total of 56 teaching staff members,consisting of 52 full-time teachers, 4 administrative personnel and oneteaching assistant. There are 2 professors and 14associate professors among thefull-time teachers; 86% of them have a Master's degree or higher (with two PhD holders included). 9 foreign specialists engaged asfull-time English teachers in the School.
The School has 3 divisions,including Department of Professional English, Department of College English, and Department of SecondLanguage Writing. Enrollment of English-language Medical majors at the undergraduate level began in the year 2005. And in 2013,students majoring in InternationalTourism and Hotel Management were admitted. The School undertakes the Englishteaching on two campuses for more than 20,000 students of 15 majors at threelevels (undergraduates, Masters and Doctors) as well as for students in the School of Continuing Education.
The School isparticularly focused on the quality of its English teaching. Non-English majors performed very well in CET-4(the pass rate remains at about 80%, which is much higher than the national average) in the recent three years. Englishmajors of the School have maintained a high level of performance in TEM4 (the passrate remains at about 80%, which is around 20% higher than the national average) and TEM8 (the pass rate remains at about 55%, which is around 15% higher than the nationalaverage). To date, several non-Englishlanguage students have been successful in various English language competitions. Nine students have won the Grand Prize in the National EnglishCompetition for College Students and more than 20 students have won the 1stprize. Five students won the 3rd prize in the National DebatingCompetition for College Students of South China and another five students gotthe 3rd prize as well in the Guangdong Contest of English ComprehensiveSkills for College Students. 11 students won the 2nd prize and 3rdprize in the English Writing Contest of Guangdong College Students.
Employment rate of English majors remains above 95% while quite afew students moved on to further education in top universities and colleges at home and aboard, such as South ChinaNormal University, Shenzhen University, Aston University in UK, KonkukUniversity in Korea, Queensland University of Technology in Australia and etc.
The School is devoted tocultivatingstudents towards acquiring comprehensive innovative and practice-oriented skills. The flexible curriculum system focuses onstudents’ ability in knowledge application, independent analysis and problem solving.Students are able to strengthen their elementary knowledge in linguistics,humanities and social science, and literature. These canreinforce students’ basic Englishknowledge and abilities (listening, speaking, reading, writing andtranslating). This system thus prepares students forvarious preofessions and industries such as, translation, education, foreign trade,tourism, cultural industry and etc..
Information technology is integrated to our programmes to create diversified surrounding for English teaching and learning.The School is equipped with 23 Digital Multi-media Language labs and 1Interpretation room. 3 major systematic platforms (independent study of “Zero Course”,TRP for writing and translating & interpreting) facilitate the Englishlearning. The partnership with many hotels (such as Sheraton Shenzhen FutianHotel, Goodview Hotel, Grand Hyatt Guangzhou, and Hyatt Hotels & Resorts )and travel agencies (such as China International Travel Service Dongguan andCCT International Travel Service) provides students with the appropriate venues forpractical courses.
Teachers in the School actively carry out pedagogical improvements,one of which is the promotion of “Zero Course”. The curriculum concept"zero starting point, zero target, zero subject, zero textbook, zeroclassroom" initially forms a student-centered course design with emphasis onpractice and process. This innovativeinitiativereform, knownas “Zero Course”, won the 2nd prize of the 7th Guangdong Teaching Award and the 1stprize of Teaching Award of Guangdong Medical College. For the past 5 years, our teachers havepublished more than 140 academic papers on important foreign language journalssuch as "Chinese Foreign Language", "Foreign LanguageAudio-visual Teaching", "Shanghai Translation", "ForeignLiterature", "Foreign Language and Literature", "Shandongforeign language teaching" and other important journals such as"Modern Educational Technology", "Guangxi NationalitiesUniversity Journal" and" Journal of Northeast NormalUniversity". Teachers also have edited 11 teaching materials (textbooks)and conducted more than 70 research projects at all level.
The School of ForeignLanguages is currently undergoing rapid development.
